THE FEDERAL PLAN FOR METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES AND SUPPORTING RESEARCH

METEOROLOGY ACROSS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

In April 2016, the Federal Committee for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research directed its subordinate committees and the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology to develop a Strategic Plan to focus many of the important yet disparate efforts ongoing within the Federal weather community. The fifteen Federal agencies comprising that community responded by contributing and distilling ideas to improve cooperation and coordination in several key areas. The resulting product is the first Strategic Plan for Federal Weather Enterprise Coordination, which covers fiscal years 2018—2022.

Previous Federal Plans

The Federal Plan for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research (Federal Plan) provides an annual snapshot of the Federal weather enterprise, as well as a look forward to the near furture. The Federal Plan answers section 304 of Public Law 87-843 of 1962, which called for "a horizontal budget showing (a) the totality of the programs for meteorology, (b) the specific aspects of the program and funding assigned to each agency, and (c) the estimated goals and financial requirements."
